AMD makes Intel lose face with new generation AI processor

AMD has implemented Radeon 890M integrated graphics into its new AI processor that will give competitors like Intel a headache.

For years, any serious gaming requires a discrete graphics card. While that's still the preferred way to go, modern integrated GPUs can still do a lot, especially with AMD's new Radeon 890M. This GPU, which is integrated into the AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 processor, may not give Cyberpunk 2077 gamers the power to play at ultra settings, but it can hold its own against some of Nvidia's most popular discrete GPUs.

Of course, we're not talking about cards like the RTX 4080 Super, but cards from several generations ago. For example, Nvidia's GTX 1650 - the second most used GPU in the Steam hardware survey - is one of the graphics cards that the Radeon 890M can keep up with.

Taking a closer look at the benchmark results, an Asus ProArt P16 laptop with an AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 CPU tested in the Geekbench Vulkan and OpenCL benchmarks scored 46,298 and 42,932, respectively. As reported by Tom's Hardware, these scores are on par with discrete GPUs we've seen in desktops and laptops for years.

The Radeon 890M beats one of AMD's most popular GPUs of all time, the RX 580, which scored 41,991 points, and is only slightly better than the RX 5500 (42,395 points in the OpenGL test). It does significantly better in Vulkan, as the RX 5500 only scored 38,138 points in that test.

Meanwhile, Nvidia's GPUs are almost as good, including the GTX 1070 with 45,011 points and the GTX 1650 Ti (mobile version) with 44,708 points. According to the review, the Radeon 890M is only about 15% slower than the GTX 1650 Super. For the base version of the GTX 1650, the Radeon 890M is significantly faster in the Vulkan test.

This is just a benchmark result, so it's hard to tell how good the Radeon 890M actually performs, especially since AMD's own data backs up the Geekbench results. While AMD doesn't reveal any exact performance numbers, the company claims that the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 is up to 1.65 times faster than the competition (Intel's Core Ultra 9 185H and Qualcomm's Snapdragon X Elite) in Cyberpunk 2077.

This doesn't mean Cyberpunk 2077 can play well with AMD's integrated GPU, but it's a pretty good number and makes Intel feel even more uncomfortable, especially when the company is facing a series of accusations of problems with 13th and 14th generation Core CPUs.

While comparing a new integrated GPU to an older discrete GPU like the GTX 1650 may not be as dramatic, the Radeon 890M is a pretty big leap. Many gamers still run these GPUs in their PCs, and they're having a blast playing games like Elden Ring. There’s more to the laptop experience, like battery life, but it’s safe to say that we’re finally at a point where gamers with integrated GPUs can still play a lot of games with ease.
