Will all Galaxy S22 versions use Snapdragon chips?

All Galaxy S22 models will be powered by Snapdragon chips, says former Samsung employee According to rumors, the Galaxy S22 “family” will launch on February 8, 2022. Just a few days ago, real-life images of the Galaxy S22 Ultra with the S Pen inside were leaked.

And recently, according to Dutch publication LetsGoDigital, Samsung may be planning to equip all global Galaxy S22 versions with the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 chip and completely skip using its own Exynos chip.

If the rumors are true, this would be a “first” for Samsung, as the company has traditionally favored its own Exynos chips in most regions globally, while only using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips in the US and a few other key markets. For example, the Galaxy S21 series comes with the Snapdragon 888 in the US, Canada, China, and Japan, but uses the Exynos 2100 elsewhere, including Vietnam. The Snapdragon 898 announcement is now scheduled for November 30. The reason for this sudden change is said to be the ongoing chip shortage (due to the COVID pandemic) that is affecting all industries. According to Super Roader, the production of the Exynos 2200 chip has proven to be quite challenging for Samsung, leaving the company without enough chips for the Galaxy S22 series. Manufacturing difficulties could also be the main reason behind the delay of the Galaxy S21 FE.

One of the production hurdles for the Exynos 2200 chip is the GPU. Samsung's next chip is expected to come with a 6-core AMD RDNA2 GPU with ray tracing technology, a "first" on a mobile device, promised improved graphics performance, competing with the iPhone 13. In fact, it's a bit absurd for Samsung to skip its Exynos chips and switch completely to Qualcomm, but the reasons given are quite convincing.

Meanwhile, a source from GalaxyClub.nl said that Samsung is planning to expand the Galaxy line with Snapdragon chips to more markets than usual, but the Exynos version will still exist. Along with that, a source from IceUniverse said that the Galaxy S22 "family" with Exynos 2200 chip is still planned to be available in "some countries and regions".

Samsung has not yet made any statement about the above information.

According to a new report from Jon Prosser, Samsung is planning to hold two Unpacked events early next year. The first will take place on January 4, 2021, and will center around the long-rumored affordable Galaxy S21 FE. The second event will take place a month later, on February 8, and will bring the Galaxy S22 series to the public (including: Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+, and Galaxy S22 Ultra).
