When it comes to foldable smartphones, the first brand we think of is Samsung, but that doesn't mean they have to be number 1.
With the launch of the Galaxy Fold in 2019, Samsung popularized the concept of foldable smartphones to consumers. Now, Samsung offers two different approaches for users looking for foldable smartphones: the Galaxy Z Fold5 and the Galaxy Z Flip5. In fact, the Korean company is already readying the successors of these two models.

Although Samsung has been the leader in this field, the latest data shows that for the first time, the Korean company is no longer the number 1 company worldwide. This is because a competitor has taken the number 1 position from Samsung, and none other than Huawei can do it.
Information from Counterpoint Research shows that Huawei has surpassed Samsung to become the leading foldable smartphone manufacturer in the first quarter of 2024. Samsung has been number 1 since the launch of the Galaxy Fold in 2019, so this is clearly a warning sign for Samsung.
Huawei's previous weakness compared to Samsung was the lack of 5G connectivity.

The report notes that Huawei achieved 35% of total foldable smartphone sales in the first three months of the year. For its part, Samsung accounted for 23% of total sales. The remaining 42% was distributed between Honor and Motorola - two companies with strong growth compared to the previous year, respectively 460% and 1473%.
These numbers are in contrast to the same period last year, when Samsung had a 58% market share, much higher than Huawei's 14%. The change is a result of Huawei's good performance, especially in China. Despite the ban from the US government, Huawei still holds a significant share of the market. In fact, its good performance in China has forced Apple to bet on a price-cutting strategy in the country, which is not unusual for the company.
But everything changed when 5G capabilities helped Huawei's foldable smartphone take off.
