Apple plans to integrate microLED technology for AR glasses and Apple Watch Ultra in 2026, promising to bring superior visual experiences.
According to TechEDT, Apple is planning to integrate microLED display technology for virtual reality (AR) glasses and Apple Watch Ultra by 2026. Although there were reports earlier this year that the microLED project for Apple Watch Ultra was canceled, new information shows that the company is still pursuing this plan.
Blogger @Jukanlosreve on the X platform (Twitter) said that Apple is actively developing microLED displays for its AR glasses, with mass production expected to begin in 2026. However, this time frame is still in doubt, as Bloomberg recently reported that Apple's AR glasses are still in the testing phase. The development process could take several more years before the product is released to the market.
Apple has not given up on plans to equip its products with microLED screens.
AR glasses are seen as a major addition to Apple’s expanding product line, but the technology behind them faces challenges. Incorporating microLED displays promises a number of benefits, including improved brightness, better power efficiency, and longer screen life. But the complexity of developing the device means a release date is still a ways off.
Additionally, @Jukanlosreve also said that the microLED project for the Apple Watch Ultra, which was reportedly canceled due to high production costs, is still in development. The new Watch Ultra, which is expected to lead the way in microLED technology in Apple's wearables, could launch in 2026.
While microLEDs offer superior picture quality to current OLED displays, manufacturing them remains challenging. Apple has previously run into production cost hurdles, leading to the cancellation of the project. However, the company continues to work to overcome these challenges.
Meanwhile, the decision to halt the microLED project for the Apple Watch Ultra has led to a compensation request from LG Display, one of the key suppliers. Two other suppliers, Ams Osram and Kulicke & Soffa, are also likely to seek compensation for their involvement in the development of microLED technology.
Bloomberg confirms that Apple is still investing heavily in microLED technology for future products, with the long-term goal of integrating this advanced display technology into its devices. The introduction of microLED displays on the Apple Watch Ultra and AR glasses could mark a major step forward for Apple, providing users with better visual experiences and performance in future products.
As usual, Apple keeps its technological developments under wraps, so the timing of these products could change. However, the 2026 target gives a clear picture of the tech giant's plans.
