Dynamic Island almost didn't exist on the iPhone because of this

Before introducing the eye-catching iPhone 14 Pro models with Dynamic Island in 2022, Apple also had another design in mind.

When Apple introduced Dynamic Island during its 2022 iPhone launch event, the initial reaction from some viewers of the livestream was surprise and excitement, while others were less impressed.

With Dynamic Island available on all four iPhone 15 models this year, more iPhone users have gotten to experience it.

Even though it has been on the market for a year, many people still feel overwhelmed by Dynamic Island.

But what many people may not know is that before deciding on the final location and capabilities of Dynamic Island, Apple considered a number of other locations and formats.

Based on the information it received, MacRumors has created various renders showing what the concepts

Apple developed would look like if the company decided to use it to replace the notch at that time.

One of the alternatives to Dynamic Island would be to place a vertical screen on the right side of the display with some of the icons typically found on the status bar on the right side of the screen.

This shows the time, cellular signal strength, Wi-Fi indicator, screen brightness, volume, and battery life indicator.

When this screen is not in use, it will not appear.

Another possibility that really caught my eye was to hide the notch in a large black status bar at the top of the screen.

The time would be displayed on the left side with status bar icons on the right.

Since the iPhone 14 Pro has an OLED panel, making the screen black requires turning off the appropriate pixels, which would also improve battery life.

When Apple created Dynamic Island, it initially stretched so far across the top of the screen that it nearly spanned the entire width of the screen. But Apple decided that Dynamic Island would be better off resizing as needed. The company also considered other possibilities for Dynamic Island, including displaying the phone’s volume; displaying a row of system shortcuts; and using a never-before-seen layout for in-progress phone calls.

Will Dynamic Island only last a few more years?

Even with the Dynamic Island design now in place, the design could soon be coming to an end. According to Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), the iPhone 17 Pro will move the front-facing camera and Face ID components below the display. That could mean the end of Dynamic Island on the Pro models. Non-Pro models, on the other hand, will get the new design as early as the iPhone 18.
