Is the iPhone 16 charging speed really at 45W as expected?

Some information suggests that the iPhone 16 will have charging speeds of up to 45W, but real-world tests have shown different results.

According to information from MacRumors, the filing with Chinese regulators shows that all iPhone 16 models are rated to be capable of charging up to 45W.

However, recent tests have shown that the actual charging speed of these devices does not reach that level.

Last week, ChargerLAB tested the iPhone 16 Pro Max with a variety of chargers, both Apple and third-party, and found that the device only reached a maximum continuous charging speed of around 30W.

In some cases, the iPhone 16 Pro Max was able to reach a maximum charging speed of 37W when using Apple's 140W USB-C power adapter, but it's unclear how long the device could maintain that speed.

While this is an improvement over the 27W maximum charging speed of the iPhone 15 Pro models, it's clear that the iPhone 16 doesn't reach the previously announced 45W charging speed.

PhoneArena also recorded similar results with the standard iPhone 16. In a recent review, the tech site said that the iPhone 16 only reached a maximum

charging speed of 38W when "under heavy load like benchmarking or gaming," while the continuous charging speed was closer to 20W.

Apple only announced that all iPhone 16 models can charge up to 50% in about 30 minutes with

a 20W or higher USB-C charger, information that the company also advertised for previous iPhone 15 models.

In short, although all iPhone 16 models support the USB-C Power Delivery 3.0 protocol (15V/3A = 45W), the devices do not actually reach this charging speed.

This suggests that there may be a misunderstanding about the higher charging speed.

However, some improvements in charging speed are still noted in certain cases.

Many iFans are curious about whether the iPhone 16 series charges faster than the previous generation of iPhones.

According to rumors, some iPhone 16 series models will have larger batteries than their predecessors. In addition to changes in battery capacity, the new chip on the iPhone 16 series could bring better energy efficiency and even longer battery life.

iPhone 16 series will have improved battery

Accordingly, the new iPhone trio , including iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, will have larger batteries. However, the iPhone 16 Plus will have nearly 9% less battery capacity than the iPhone 15 Plus.

In return, the new Apple A18 and A18 Pro chips will bring significantly better energy efficiency, extended battery life, and improved performance thanks to TSMC's second-generation 3nm process (called N3E).

Previously, TSMC's first 3nm chips produced powerful chips like Apple's A17 Pro silicon, but they didn't have a good balance between power consumption and delivery. However, the chip manufactured on the N3E process has overcome this problem.

iPhone 16 Series Will Have Charging Upgrades

2024 will be the second year that all iPhone models will have USB-C ports, allowing iPhones to charge faster than the current 20-27W. However, Apple has been slow to adopt charging upgrades, so it's likely that the charging capabilities of this year's iPhone 16 lineup won't change.
