Patent information suggests that Apple may equip new FaceID technology for the iPhone 17 series.
Apple has just been granted a patent for technology that allows FaceID to be embedded directly under the screen, a step forward that reduces the size of the camera cutout on its devices. Although Apple has been researching this technology for a long time, users are still skeptical about whether the iPhone 17 will be equipped with hidden FaceID.

The idea of embedding FaceID sensors and transmitters into the display has been mentioned by Apple in multiple patents, including one from 2021. Accordingly, the device could use the image through the screen for a variety of purposes, including facial recognition and taking photos. Previously, it was reported that this feature would appear on the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16, but that did not happen.
Apple recently received another patent for this method, which would allow the light source to be embedded directly under the screen, saving space. While previous predictions have failed to materialize, there is reason to believe that this technology could appear on the iPhone 17.
First, multiple reports suggest that at least one iPhone model this year will have a smaller display cutout. Analyst Jeff Pu predicts that the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature a “dramatically narrower” Dynamic Island design. Embedding FaceID into the display would be an effective way to achieve this.
Second, the iPhone 17 Air is also aiming for a thinner design. Shrinking the Dynamic Island into a camera hole would make sense for this goal. However, it is said that the price of the 17 Air will be higher than the 17 Pro Max, despite having only one camera and not having as many features as the Pro model.
