Gen Z users are increasingly addicted to smartphones

Many people would not believe the amount of time they spent on average checking their phone in 2024.

According to a survey conducted by Reviews.org, the average American checks their smartphone 205 times a day. In other words, users pick up their phones every five minutes throughout the day. In all of 2024, Americans spent 2.5 months checking their phones.

In 2024, Americans will use 42.3% more smartphones than in 2023

When Steve Jobs introduced the iPhone in January 2007, he knew it would change the world. But he may not have anticipated how much people would change their behavior after the iPhone's launch. While the iPhone wasn't the first smartphone, its touchscreen, easy-to-use interface, and the launch of the App Store the following year meant that many people would be glued to their screens, even while walking down the street.

For Americans, the numbers above are much higher in 2024 than in 2023. In 2023, the average American checked their phone 144 times a day. In other words, Americans used their phones 42.3% more often in 2024 than they did in 2023. Perhaps the 2024 election contributed to this increase.

What are Americans doing with their phones every day?

- 80.6% of users check their phones within the first 10 minutes of waking up

- 65.7% of users use their phones while in the bathroom

- 53.7% of users have used their phone to text someone even when in the same room

- 38.1% of people use their phones or look at their phones while on a date

- 27% of users use or look at their phone while driving

Americans are sensitive to the "ding" sound of their phones when they receive notifications. That's why 76% of users will check their phones within 5 minutes of receiving a notification.

Younger people, in particular, spend more time on their phones each day. Gen Zers are the biggest users, spending an average of 6 hours and 18 minutes a day doing something on their phones. Gen Y is right behind them, with an average of 6 hours and 2 minutes a day on their phones. Gen X is next, spending 4 hours and 54 minutes on their phones each day. Baby boomers spend an average of 3 hours and 18 minutes a day on their phones. The Silent Generation spends just 1 hour and 16 minutes a day on their smartphones.
