HMD Global has just introduced a new product called HMD OffGrid, their first “terrestrial communications network (NTN)” device.
The device promises to provide users with reliable satellite connectivity even in harsh conditions.
Specifically, HMD OffGrid allows iOS and Android phones to connect directly to satellites via the L Band satellite radio spectrum.

The compact device weighs just 60 grams, has a battery life of up to three days, and meets the MIL-STD-810H military durability standard.
Additionally, its dedicated app allows for two-way messaging and a “check-in” feature that lets users send pre-configured messages with the push of a button.
The HMD OffGrid also comes with FocusPoint International's Overwatch x Rescue service, which provides 24/7 emergency support.
While some existing phones already have satellite connectivity, the HMD OffGrid offers a budget-friendly solution for those who don't want to spend money on a new phone.
The device costs $200 with the HMD Unlimited service plan, which costs $14.99 per month or $139.99 per year for unlimited messaging and SOS services.

HMD isn’t the first company to offer this solution. Motorola also launched the Defy Satellite Link device in 2023, which uses the Bullitt Satellite Connect network.
However, the emergence of HMD OffGrid shows that even lesser-known companies can offer useful products that help users stay connected in difficult situations.
This is in contrast to what Apple and Samsung offer, which require users to buy new smartphones to get the satellite experience.
With HMD OffGrid, adventure enthusiasts can feel more confident when venturing into the wilderness, without having to invest in expensive high-end smartphones.
