During the recent Galaxy Unpacked event, Samsung introduced a new member of the Galaxy S25 family, the Galaxy S25 Edge.
While it's no surprise that information about the device has been leaked before, analysts say convincing people to spend money on the device won't be easy, as the Galaxy S25 Edge seems to be a gimmick.
Samsung X820 attracted attention with its super slim design in 2006.
History has shown that the trend toward slim smartphones is often unsustainable. Back in 2004, Motorola started the slim phone craze with the RAZR, and in 2006, Samsung released the X820, which was the world’s thinnest phone at the time, measuring just 6.9mm thick. However, even with such a slim design, the X820 still felt uncomfortable to hold.
The trend was repeated in 2014 with phones like the Oppo R5 and Gionee Elfie. Now, the craze for thin phones is back with the Galaxy S25 Edge promising a thickness of 6.4mm, which will likely struggle to beat the iPhone 17 Air, which is rumored to be just 5.5mm thick.
At MWC 2025 in Barcelona, a number of tech reporters got to hold the Galaxy S25 Edge in their hands, albeit a dummy model. Even if it wasn't the real thing, it still felt too thin and uncomfortable, and brought back the old X820 image.
Should users choose an ultra-thin phone or a regular one with a big battery?
Besides, the experience with the Tecno Spark Slim phone is only 5.75 mm thick, the feeling of holding it is still not comfortable. With a thin phone, they really look weak and rough. This makes many people ask the question: Should we choose a phone with a 10,000 mAh battery that is 9-10 mm thick or such ultra-thin devices? Perhaps many people will choose the first option.
Are the Galaxy S25 Edge's price and features worth it?
The Galaxy S25 Edge’s failure has become even more apparent since pricing information has leaked. According to sources, the phone will start at around $1,099, which is higher than the Galaxy S25 and S25 Plus. While the Galaxy S25 Edge’s thickness may be a draw, many are questioning whether the price is worth what the product offers.
The high price makes the Galaxy S25 Edge less appealing.
In terms of configuration, the Galaxy S25 Edge is expected to be equipped with a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, a 6.7-inch screen with FHD + resolution and a pixel density of less than 400 ppi. The device will have 8 GB of RAM and a 3,900 mAh battery. The main camera is expected to be a 200 MP sensor but not as powerful as the sensor on the Galaxy S25 Ultra. Compared to the Galaxy S25 Plus, the Galaxy S25 Edge seems less attractive when lacking some features such as a telephoto camera, a larger battery and a higher resolution screen (513 ppi).
It’s worth noting that the Galaxy S25 Edge could struggle against competitors like the iPhone 16e and Pixel 9a. The iPhone 16e starts at $599, while the Pixel 9a is expected to keep its $499 price tag. Both offer a better user experience at a lower price, making it tough for the Galaxy S25 Edge to compete.
